Blues for Blue Monday

Blue_Monday-756139Since 2005 we call that the third Monday of the year ‘Blue Monday’. It’s supposed to be the most depressing day of the year. On Monday we feel more down than on other days, and even more so on the third Monday of the year. It’s cold, dark, the holidays are behind us and we realize that we didn’t manage to hold on to the good intentions we started the year with.

Every time I hear of Blue Monday, I think the Blues, of the song ‘Blue Monday’ by Fats Domino. Friends appreciate the Blues in different ways. Some like it for showing others suffering even more than they are; some, like me, find it somehow uplifting. Blues is also about songwriting. SinĂ©ad O’Connor said, that making a Blues-album was the best lesson she had in the craft of writing good songs. What’s your attitude towards the Blues?

Yesterday I read, that calling the third Monday of the year ‘Blue Monday’, is an invention of the British psychologist Cliff Arnall, to enhance the turnover of a travel agency. If you know that, and combine it with listening to some uplifting Blues, next Monday might become a wonderful day. I will listen to Tom Waits again. What’s your favorite Blues artist?

Enjoy!
